Dry Eye Syndrome Explained

Dry eye is a complex condition where your eyes either don’t produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to an inadequate tear film, causing discomfort and potential damage to the front surface of your eyes.

There are different types of dry eye:

  1. Evaporative Dry Eye: This type occurs when the oil glands in your eyelids (meibomian glands) don’t produce enough oil to prevent the tears from evaporating too quickly. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common cause of evaporative dry eye.
  2. Aqueous-Deficient Dry Eye: In this type, your eyes don’t produce enough of the watery component of tears, which is necessary for maintaining a stable tear film.
